LLamasoft Part of Award-winning Military Logistics Team
Ann Arbor, MI - May 6, 2010 - LLamasoft's Department of Defense
(DoD) consulting team and their software application, Supply
Chain Guru®, have played a key role in support of the U.S.
Transportation Command (USTRANSCOM) analysis and design of the
U.S. military's new Northern Distribution Network (NDN) into Afghanistan.
The NDN team has been recognized by the Supply Chain Council as
the recipient of the 2010 Department of Defense (DoD) Award for
Supply Chain Operational Excellence.
The Northern Distribution Network (NDN) is a joint initiative
of multiple agencies within the United States Department of Defense
led by the U.S. Transportation Command (USTRANSOM). The NDN project
identified and established new distribution routes that connect
Baltic and Caspian ports with Afghanistan via Russia, Central
Asia, and the Caucasus. The flexible supply line, which relies
entirely on commercial shippers, now serves as an alternative
to the vulnerable ground route that follows the Karachi-Peshawar
road through Pakistan that had been used exclusively since 2001.
"By aligning distribution processes to a common set of performance-based
SCOR metrics, NDN has established an effective supplement and
viable alternative to existing Pakistan supply lines," said SCC
Executive Director Joseph Francis. "NDN is a stellar example of
how to use SCOR to enhance supply chain velocity, precision, visibility
and efficiency to bolster coalition forces.
"Now that NDN is in full operation, the entire region directly
contributes to the re-supply of coalition forces and has a larger
economic and strategic stake in the success of coalition operations
in Afghanistan. By opening up new commercial distribution routes,
NDN also creates an opportunity for a more sustainable flow of
goods that could speed economic progress in Afghanistan, Pakistan,
Uzbekistan, Tajikistan and Kazakhstan.
"Over the last few years, LLamasoft and Northrop Grumman have
worked closely with US Transportation Command to successfully
deploy our cutting edge simulation and optimization capabilities
to address a variety of complex military logistics planning problems"
stated LLamasoft President Donald Hicks. "We are honored to be
part of USTRANSCOM's efforts for advanced logistics support in
the NDN and that our team was recognized by the Supply Chain Council
for their mission critical efforts in support of coalition forces."
